Women’s Ministry

The American Baptist Women’s Ministries bring together all the women of the church into a fellowship that helps each woman grow as a person and Christian through worship, work, and witness at home, in the community, and the world. It provides the opportunities for each woman to:

  • Become and develop as God’s person
  • Build God’s faith community, and
  • Serve God’s world.

Ephesians 4:12-13
“to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body
of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the
knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining
to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

“A Time to Serve,” the 2013-2015 program theme of American Baptist Women’s Ministries, will help you understand how you have been uniquely shaped by God for the ministry to which you’ve been called, and sent out to the world.

At First Baptist Church, we have five active mission circles, which meet the third Thursday of each month from August through May (check the bulletin or Beacon for times). Each circle has a Special Mission Concern (listed below), Special Interest Missionary, Scholarship Girl, and Hometown College Girls.

Special ABWM meetings are held the first Tuesday evenings in March, May, September and November when all women of the church, including those not presently involved in mission circles, come together for a time of Christian fellowship. The Executive Board meets the first Tuesday of February, April, August, October, and December.

Outside church activities include Spiritual Growth Retreat and Fall & Spring Rallies sponsored by the Teays Valley Baptist Association of American Baptist Women’s Ministries. The Annual State ABWM Conference in June and State Spiritual Growth Retreat in October are held at the Parchment Valley Conference Center in Ripley, WV. The National Women’s Conference at Green Lake, WI, is held each summer and offers additional opportunities for our ladies to meet other women from across the country.

Other avenues of service and outreach include Veterans Home, Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Ministry through Samaritan’s Purse, and Harvest of Hope Backpack Ministry.

Today’s Love Gift story began for American Baptist Women in 1932. Times were hard for everyone in those Depression years, and especially difficult for the American Baptist Missionary effort. When the plight of missions became known to Baptist Women, their response was to help, and help they did. Thus began the tradition of Love Gift although it was not so named until 1941.

We date our Love Gift story from 1932, but is it not a story that began long ago? People recognized and accepted the love of God through Jesus when He said, “In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40 (KJ)

Love Gift is used to support the United Mission Program of American Baptist Churches. We feel so good about Love Gift because it represents that little extra we each can do to further the gospel.
